Hamas has expressed a positive response to President Biden's ceasefire proposal, raising hopes for an end to Israel's eight-month war, which has claimed the lives of over 36,000 Palestinians, primarily women and children.

Three Hamas battalions have been engaged in a prolonged defense of Jabalia amid a major three-week Israeli military operation, described by war monitors as some of the most intense fighting of the conflict.

The UN's food agency reports that daily life has become "apocalyptic" in parts of southern Gaza following Israel's move into the city of Rafah.

US President Biden states that the new Israeli proposal for a Gaza truce, presented to Hamas, offers "a roadmap to an enduring ceasefire and the release of all hostages," emphasizing that "it's time to end this war."

Since October 7, at least 36,284 Palestinians have been killed and 82,057 wounded in Israel's war on Gaza. The death toll in Israel from Hamas's attacks stands at at least 1,139, with dozens of people still held captive in Gaza.
